President’s letter – May 2013

dreamstime_s_258949132Crystal-ball gazers the world over were, late last year, prophesying that 2013 would be the year that “social” became “mainstream” – not just something for the young and hip but that from boardrooms and retirement villages it would become the norm and integrated into the very fabric of the way in which we do business. With developments such as the recent SEC ruling in the USA recognising the legitimacy of disclosure by public companies via twitter and our own ASX requiring listed companies to actively monitor social media in the wake of the Whitehaven hoax – the predictions of pundits are certainly being borne out.

But with the proliferation of all this information sharing comes the growing problem of overload. How do we produce content that is timely, relevant, cuts through the noise and resonates with our stakeholders so as to leave them wanting more? Content management was certainly a core area of focus at our recent IABC Victoria strategy day and the theme is one we thought worth opening up to the membership – and also to inform our events.

online-contentAccordingly, on the IABC Victoria blog this month member, Wayne Aspland shares his reflections on the need to inspire through the material we produce. In addition, on 8 May, Angus Gordon of Weave Web ran a web content workshop for members and guests entitled “When bad web happens to good people”. The interactive session looked not only at why problems with content occur, but also at what strategies and processes can be put in place to address them. For a quick overview and some tips on useful tools, processes and further reading, check out the tweetstream at #iabcvic. The workshop proved to be an interesting hub of ideas to breathe fresh air into stale sites. Thank you to Weave Web for helping bring this valuable opportunity to our IABC Victoria community.

It is coming up to that time of year again. The IABC Victoria night of nights, the annual gala will this year be held on 6 June. We are delighted to yet again bring you an international guest speaker for this prestigious event. Lucy Marcus, CEO, Director, Professor at IE Business School, Reuters columnist and host of “In the Boardroom with Lucy Marcus” will be headlining the evening. Lucy is the recipient of a long list of honours and awards including: Time Magazine’s Global 140 best Twitter feeds, Most Influential Tweeter in Corporate Governance 2011, 2102 and 2013, World Economic Forum Global Leader for Tomorrow and was voted one of the “most Powerful Britons on Twitter” in 2010, 2011 and 2012. We are incredibly lucky to have her joining us on 6 June.

Details of the gala will be up on the website soon. There are some awesome discounts for those who get in quick, as well as significant discounts for our corporate members. The annual gala really is our night of nights – a night for celebrating excellence in our profession. Last year we sold out very quickly so please do get in early to avoid disappointment. I sincerely hope you can join us for what promises to be a spectacular evening.

For those of you who have recently joined up as members, we will be “breaking the ice” over drinks immediately before the event. This will be our second “new member drinks” function and hope to see many of our new members there. Details will be sent to you closer to the date.

Finally, we are awaiting the outcome of the International Gold Quill judging. Special thanks to Ross Monaghan and Deakin University for hosting the first ever Blue Ribbon Judging Panel to be held outside North America. We have in this newsletter included a sneak peak behind the scenes of Gold Quills judging. Thank you also to all who took the time to enter, mentor entrants or judge the awards. I trust you found the experience a rewarding one.
