President’s Report: Make your mark in 2014

Happy New Year everyone,

After a well-earned break, 2014 appears to have started at a frenetic pace. IABC is progressing changes to our global professional development program – including the launch of the new IABC Academy, and to the international website and the member database. By now all members should have received the official call for entries for the 2014 Gold Quills – this is open to all communication professionals.

 

Focus on Professional Development

IABC offers communications practitioners a suite of professional development opportunities. In the past two years the professional development has been undergoing change. This has included the Gold Quills Awards that were revamped last year. An overview of the why and what can be found in an interview with Tim Buckley Chair of the 2013 Gold Quill Awards Program.

The Gold Quills is the only program of its kind that recognises the strength of research-based, strategy-driven work on a global scale. It presents you with an opportunity to boost your career, build your professional brand and earn recognition from your profession. The spectrum of 47 categories across four divisions is broad so it is certainly worth considering entering. Additionally, IABC Victoria recognises a Gold Quill entry that progresses to the blue ribbon judging stage with a Bronze Quill award. So you can enter two Award programs with one entry – time saving.

On another positive note, there are tips on how to enter on the Gold Quill website and at the local level IABC Victoria will connect you with a mentor to assist you with the entry process.

Earlier this month, all members would have received an update from Robin McCasland IEB Chair IABC on the Communication Certification Program and the forthcoming launch of the IABC Academy at the Leadership Institute in New Orleans next month. Time to Engage

We are quite thrilled to be hosting our first event with a high caliber international guest speaker from the UK. Russell Grossman has over 30 years experience in the communications profession across corporate affairs, change management, public affairs and employee engagement in both public and private sectors.

Russell is the Director of Communications for the Department of Business Innovation and Skills, as well as a Director of Engage for Success. On the 6th of March Russell will share his insights from his experience with the Engage for Success program that was established by David Cameron in 2011.

Russell is also the Vice Chair IEB for IABC and is leading the development of IABC strategy for 2014-17. You can read more on where this is heading here

 

There’s More …

There are two conferences to look out for on this year’s calendar – IABC’s World Conference in Toronto June 8-11 as well as the Corporate Affairs Summit (CAS) in Sydney May 27-28. If you’re thinking of attending a communications or corporate affairs conference this year then these two should be on the top of your consideration list. In the coming month we will be running a special member promotion for CAS 2014 that is great value.

On the topic of special promotions, the organisers of Social Business 2014 is offering a generous 20% discount off the registration fee to IABC members and friends. You can read more about it here. Social Business 2014 has an exceptional lineup of local and international speakers and is happening in Melbourne on February 18-19.

Last month one of our dedicated IABC Victoria Board members, Amanda Purdie, retired from her role as Secretary/Treasurer. We’d like to express our thanks to Amanda for her commitment in keeping us on track in 2013 and wish her well in her new role at Ovarian Cancer Australia.

Fortunately we have members who are keen to be involved in the IABC Victoria community and give back to the profession, and we welcome Juliane McNamara to the role of Secretary/Treasurer.
