President’s report: set for the future

 

Hello everyone,

The past six weeks have felt like a whirlwind. Not out of control but certainly lots of constant juggling and activity. All with purpose.

 

IABC World Conference

Leading up to the IABC World Conference in Toronto in early June, I coordinated the presentations and speakers for the marketing track to ensure that the quality of the sessions met expectations. Being the marketing track chair had its advantages. I connected with eight very talented and diverse experts who shared their knowledge and stories across a broad range of topics. It is certainly a worthwhile experience should you be presented with the opportunity to be a track chair at the World Conference.

One of the marketing track speakers, Michael Lenz, Director Brand Experience Design Cisco Systems, shared the journey of transforming their customer and brand experience through the simplicity of language. My thanks to Michael and his colleague Mark Buchanan for sharing their case study with us here at IABC Victoria.

As track chair my schedule did not allow me the opportunity to attend other breakout sessions but I was fortunate to participate in the extraordinary Circles of Wisdom from the IABC Fellows and the general conference sessions. Since the conference there have been a few conference-related articles written (there's a conference wrap-up here) but we thought we’d share just a few of the highlights including the memorable and engaging Mike Walsh who opened the conference.

 

Gearing up for the future

This year IABC created the Brand Taskforce to develop a coherent brand strategy for IABC that is aligned with the IEB 2014-17 strategy. To date they have undertaken research with members and non-members and are now auditing the creative assets at the local, regional and international level. At the World Conference fifteen IABC members, including myself, participated in the IABC Brand Camp. This was a workshop to review and assess the brand’s look and feel, and develop the key messaging. The Taskforce aims to engage a creative agency by the last quarter of 2014.

It was also time for the IABC AGM at the end of the World Conference. There were a number of issues of concern that were addressed by the outgoing International Executive Board (IEB) Chair Robin McCasland and Secretary Terry Cerisoles. Shel Holtz has posted a frank synopsis of the issues and discussion from the AGM. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Robin McCasland for the incredible passion and volume of (volunteer) work that she has contributed over the past twelve months. She has now passed the crystal gavel (literally) on to new Chair, Russell Grossman from the United Kingdom. Many of you would have met Russell when he visited Melbourne (his “favourite city in the world”) in March and led the development of the IABC 2014-17 strategy. The AGM also ratified the new members for the 2014-15 IEB.

The other major news from the World Conference was the announcement the new IABC Executive Director, Carlos Fulcher. Carlos will be commencing in his new role in early July and joins the association with years of leadership experience in association management, IT and global operations.

 

A great achievement for Victorian communicators

Of course I can’t finish my comments on the World Conference without mention of the Gold Quill Awards. Collecting my Gold Quill in front of a room of peers was certainly a highlight for me personally, however I was particularly honoured to collect the Business Issues Gold Quill on behalf of Transurban and VicRoads. This was conferred at the end of the formal part of the night and Adrian Cropley, ABC and Melissa Dark, ABC who collected the Best of the Best Gold Quills on behalf of Telstra and Cabrini Health joined me on stage. A proud moment for IABC Victoria.

Focusing back on local news, we recently called for nominations for the Professional Development/Events portfolio co-chair roles on the IABC Victoria Board. We would like to thank the members who have nominated and look forward to announcing the new Board members by the end of July.

 

Our next event: the art of online reputation management

We are excited to have developed a strong calendar of events for the remainder of this year. The next event at lunchtime on Tuesday 29 July focuses on developing and protecting brand and reputation in the online and social context. We have a panel of high calibre speakers covering a range of online brand and reputation issues. Registrations for the event are now open.
