President’s update – July 2016

In preparing to write my column this month, I took to the web for inspiration. I always find this time of year a bit challenging, there just isn’t enough sunshine for me and there is still so much of winter to go!

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one month or even by the end of this school term. But, IABC friends, I have never been more hopeful than I am today that we will get there.

I promise you, we as a group will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the IABC can’t solve every problem.

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree.

It’s been an interesting time in the world, filled predominantly with horrendous stories of violence and sadness. But it is the little gems like Melania Trump that bring a smile to my face. If you haven’t seen the speech, then I strongly encourage you to check it out here.

Creativity and authenticity can be tough to master, but they are traits that, when combined, can make great communicators. Creativity in particular is something that we are all expected to just know and have on tap at any given moment – I doubt there is anyone reading this that hasn’t been put on the spot to come up with the perfect tagline or pitch-idea in 30 minutes.

This is exactly what we will be talking about with Professor Robert Wood and Rhod Ellis-Jones at our sold-out breakfast event on Thursday. I predicted this one would be popular!

I have a bottle of wine ready for the first person to correctly identify the speech I plagiarized above – send us (@iabcvic and @deblemcke) a tweet with the hashtag #creativity.

Cheers, Deb
