President’s Update – March 2017

I have started quite a few of my updates with this statement and it absolutely applies this month – this Presidential gig is pretty fabulous! In case you missed our big news in the last week, we have been awarded three chapter management awards for our work in events, communications management and student liaison. I know how hard everyone on the Board works and these types of awards go some way to recognising that in a public way. Congratulations to the whole team on an awesome job very well done.

L-R: Dianne Chase – IABC Global Chair, Zora Artis – IABC International Executive Board Director, and Stephanie Doute – IABC Executive Director

Winning these awards is a very nice way for the 2016 Board to finish its tenure – I can’t believe this is my last update! Twelve months really does fly by when you are having fun (and you’re incredibly busy). I have thoroughly enjoyed myself and cannot more highly recommend that you consider volunteering and getting involved with the Chapter or one of the regional or international opportunities that exist. It is the best way to expand your network, meet amazing people and truly appreciate the strength and creativity of the communications profession.

I officially hand over to your new President Ivan Levacic at the AGM on Thursday 9 March – find details here, all members welcome – and join the PPPP (Past Presidents Protection Program). I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Board, all of the past presidents, past board members and members who have been so generous with their time, support and encouragement over the last twelve months, I sincerely appreciate it.

March is a busy month! It marks a number of important dates for me including my 17th anniversary of moving to Melbourne and more importantly, International Women’s Day. As the Director and owner of a business that is proudly powered by women, this is a great time to acknowledge the fabulous women in my life and I would urge you to do the same. #equality

March is membership month: the perfect time to join or renew your IABC membership at a discounted rate and you will also go in the draw to win a VIP package to the IABC World Conference. March is also home to one of our most popular event Talk55. Tickets are on sale and I promise it will be a really fun night. And, if you are thinking of joining me in Singapore for our Regional Conference in August, early bird rate for members, non-members and corporate members finish 31 March.

Like all industries, our sector loves a buzzword and at the moment it seems like all roads lead to authenticity – it is better than “bespoke” so I should be grateful for small mercies. I feel like authenticity is something I have in spades but at the same time, I can’t help but cringe at the word and shy away from using it. In chatting to a very smart women this week, she helped me understanding that authenticity is really just about gaining trust and that in order to do that, we just need to deliver on the things we say we are going to do.  So if there is one thing that defines my Presidency, I hope it’s authenticity.

Cheers, Deb
