Thank you for an amazing 2014! President’s Report

At this time of year most of us reflect back on the year we’ve had whilst keeping in mind the year ahead. The IABC Victoria Board has been doing just this as we undertook the process of entering IABC’s Chapter Management Awards that will be awarded at the Leadership Institute in Orlando in February. This process has clarified what an amazing year 2014 has been — the infographic provides a visual snapshot.

We set out to practice what we preach. Set a clear direction and strategy based on insight and focused on delivering outcomes. Have a well-thought out plan and execute it well. Sounds relatively simple but as we all know there are hurdles that need to be overcome. The board has done an incredible job in working cohesively, with lots of determination and hard work. I thank them all for their energy, commitment and focus.

Thanks to our professional partners – Coral Communications, Deakin University, Ampersand Executive, The Launch Box, and Think HQ – for the support that you have given to our chapter and the IABC. The support of our partners has enabled our chapter to deliver value to our members and community and to ensure the sustainability of our chapter.

Our heartfelt thanks goes out to our members and community who support IABC by joining and renewing your membership, attending our events, entering the Gold Quills, contributing to our blog, subscribing to our content and engaging on social media. Thanks also to the senior leaders in the profession who shown their support through the Corporate Affairs Advisory Board, contributing to our blog, speaking at our events and encouraging their staff to become involved in the IABC.

Call for Board Nominations:

The best way to extract maximum value from your membership and develop your professional skills is to join the chapter Board. We have a number of roles that will become available in February and I would encourage you to seriously consider the opportunity. More on the call for nominations is in this edition and if you are interested to find out more then please contact me directly.

Global:

There is a flurry of activity with IABC at the global level that you may not be aware of and is worth bringing to your attention.

  • IABC website – the new look site iabc.com is now live. Please take the time to explore the site on the desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile. If you have feedback then please let IABC know at website@iabc.com.
  • IABC World Conference 14 – 17 June 2015 San Francisco – earlybird registrations closing midnight 31 December PST (that’s 7pm 1 January AEST). With this year’s theme, “Changing the Landscape: Informing the future,” you will experience sessions that will stimulate your thinking. Having been to the last two world conferences I can highly recommend attending (add the link). Hope to see you there.
  • IABC Gold Quills – submission deadline is fast approaching midnight 7 January 2015 PST (that’s 7pm 8 January AEST). Another worthwhile professional development opportunity that I would encourage you to seriously consider entering. Check out the article in this edition about the Gold Quills.

Russell Grossman

Last month we were thrilled to host the IABC IEB Chair Russell Grossman for the second time in 2014. Many of you will have heard his presentation on Engage for Success in March. This time we kept him to a hectic schedule of visits with corporate members where he shared his thoughts on trends for communicators, engagement, communications best practice and leadership. This is one of the elements that we offer to corporate partners as a value add when the opportunity arises.

A summary of his thoughts can be found in his wrap up and another from our membership chair Julie Weldon.

Once again, a huge thank you to all our members, professional partners, supporters, volunteers and the Board members for making this a very memorable year. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very safe and enjoyable Christmas break and fabulous 2015.

Cheers,

Z
